fly away remedies

fly awaywe are headed to visit my sister in just a couple of days.  i couldn’t be more excited and in more need of a break.  i am most excited just to see caius and jane together again.  we miss her so much and can’t wait to catch her up on all the new developments since we last were together.  this will not be caius’ first flight but it will be the first in his own seat and without any certain crutches to rely on (carriers, nursing, napping…).  i think i am prepared for the flight and will share some of my tips and tricks on flying with a toddler after i test what does and doesn’t work on our upcoming flights.

i spent most of the day organizing and packing our bags.  of course, i always make sure to pack a handful of remedies that have broad use and purpose in case we run into any troubles while away.  homeopathic remedies make great travelling companions as they are light, multi use and easy to administer and store.  just a few remedies can cover a broad range of complaints and take up little precious packing space.  the remedies can be used preventatively or ‘nip in the bud’ before illness negatively affects your travels or holiday.  here are my favourite travel remedies and their uses.

arnica (obviously)

  • jet lag
  • feeling foggy or shocked
  • feel ‘beat up’, aching muscles
  • worn out from travel
  • injury (see arnica)

gelsemium

  • anxiety before travel
  • weakness, trembling
  • exhaustion
  • flu

cocculus

  • jet lag
  • dizziness or spaciness
  • insomnia despite exhaustion
  • change in sleep pattern
  • disorientation
  • motion sickness

nux vomica

  • flight hangover
  • tired and irritable
  • headache with chilliness and/or nausea
  • cold/flu
  • digestive disturbances with frequent urging to move bowels, urinate or vomit
  • hangover (from alcohol or overindulgence in food)

arsenicum album

  • travellers diarrhea and/or vomiting with exhaustion
  • food poisoning
  • cold/flu

belladonna

  • sunstoke
  • hot, dry skin after over exposure
  • bursting, throbbing headache
  • fever which is sudden with heat and redness
  • onset of illness
  • cold/flu/cough/sore throat/ear infection/teething/headache

calendula ointment

  • cuts, scrapes, burns, sores, sunburns, bug bites, itchiness, rashes, dry skin, diaper rash …

the list could go on depending on where you are going and what you may be susceptible to during your travels.  you can find remedies at your local natural health retailer.  for dosages you can contact and consult with a homeopathic physician or follow the instructions as labelled, only as needed.  once symptoms have subsided stop dosing and allow the remedy to guide your body in healing and recovery.   happy travels.
